Meet Microsoft's International Recruiters!

By Anne Cheng

Hello, again! I’ve introduced myself recently so thought I would quickly introduce you to the rest of your International Recruiting Team. I’ll start with the recruiters and then in later installments, I’ll include our Staffing Associates and Support team. It’s always better to be able to place a face with the email address you are corresponding with.

Our team primarily recruits International candidates outside of the United States, into US based positions. For more information or to apply, please visit www.microsoft.com/college/overseas.mspx

If you are an international candidate who is interested in positions in our development centers outside of the US, please still email us. We occasionally partner with our other development centers to recruit top talent. At any rate, we’ll be able to pass your resume on to the right recruiter.

Self-introduction by Mindy: Mindy Honcoop
Hi. My name is Mindy Honcoop. I graduated from the University of Washington with a Social Work degree and Dance minor and immediately started working at Microsoft on the College Recruiting Team. I worked with the College Recruiting team for 6 yrs and joined the International Recruiting team in September, 2006. In my free time I enjoy hiking, traveling abroad, running, and performing with one of Seattle’s local modern dance companies.

We look forward to hearing from you!

    Hello everyone :)

h1-B impacted Pm-hire here. Can you give sme sort of a time estimate - by when will I know whether I am going to vanouver or not? My recruiter tells me t hang on.. but is unable to offer a timeframe ... and i do not know who my hiring manager is (he was replaced). .. so some general idea of by when a pm candidate(fresh out of college) will know.. also..what are my chances? i read elsewhere that developers will be made offers for certain, but PMs may not ... is that so?

  • Anne Cheng said:

Hello someoneNew - your recruiter is still your go to person. They have the most up to date information and they are working with the team that made you the original offer. I really wish we could give you some more news, but it really sounds like they are just working on it. From someone seeing it from behind the scenes, it's amazing how hard the recruiters are working to try to get information back to their candidates. As for your question on whether or not PM's will receive Vancouver offers - it's case by case. This is the same for SDE's and SDET candidates as well.

Sorry your wait has been so long....hopefully your recruiter will get back to you soon with some news!

    Hi Anne,

    thanks for the reply.

Pardon my naivette, But from my point of view I find it hard to figure out why asking my manager a yes\no type question .. or atleast getting a timeframe by when he can answer, out of him, should take an indefinite amount of time.

it would be great if you could explain a little bit about the internal process.

  • Anne Cheng said:

    Hi someoneNew -

Your questions are valid and I understand that not knowing is super frustrating. The question you are posing isn't as simple as a yes or no. While I don't know what is happening in your case specifically, here are my thoughts. Teams essentially need to decide whether or not it makes sense for a PM to be up in Vancouver. For some projects - it just might not make sense for the PM to work remotely while it does for others. What is likely happening is that your recruiter is working this out with your organization. If your team isn't able to extend you a PM offer - your recruiter may also be checking in to see if other teams would have PM openings that would match your skill set up in Vancouver.

This process won't be indefinite - I'm just not personally able to give you a timeframe.

Let me know if you have other questions and I'll do my best to address,

    Anne

Good question Nikhil - we haven't set dates for our International recruiting trips just quite yet, but we should be recruiting candidates worldwide starting very soon. Best bet is for you to submit your resume to: http://www.microsoft.com/college/overseas.mspx and we'll review and contact you directly if there is a fit with our open positions.

I was wondering - I'm in Australia at the moment and I have had a telephone interview already (some months ago). I got an email today requesting a further telephone interview - at which I can only assume is to ascertain whether and interview would be the next step. I have a Bachelor of Computer Science.

The position would entail me moving to the US. I'm just curious as to the relocation package. I understand if you can't give me specifics but a general overview would be handy. See I am meant to be getting married this December and its hard to try and plan around this prospect as well. I'm very excited about the possibility of working for Microsoft but was told that I would most likely need to move if successful by December/January and I am also meant to be getting married in December.

    I hope this makes sense.

Hi - I'm going to try to respond to everyone's questions in this comment. Let me know if I missed anything or if you need more clarification:)

Nikhil and Jonee - our international website was updated yesterday so all the 2006 dates have been taken off. We don't have our dates yet for this year, but we'll be recruiting starting this fall on. I encourage you to submit your resume and recruiters for your region will be looking out for new resumes. If we find that match - we'll contact you directly.

Mahesh - vendors should feel free to apply to our full time roles.

Sravanthi - While I believe it's always good to network, that is not the only way to get a position at Microsoft. In my last recruiting trip, the majority of the candidates were not referred. These candidates submitted their resumes online. I thought that the resumes were a good fit for some of our open positions and contacted them for initial interviews. If you aren't referred or if you didn't meet us at one of our events - likely your resume is the only data we in the beginning - make sure it is doing a good job of selling your experience/background while staying truthful. It's also good to tailor your resume to the company or the position. There are tons of great information online (including this blog) about how to write solid resumes.

Curious - congrats on your upcoming wedding date! Our start dates are typically flexible. Just let them know when you'll be available and your recruiter will be able to work out a good date for everyone if an offer is made. Our typical relocation package for international technical candidates moving to the States is pretty comprehensive. Most of the candidates when I walk them through their relocation package are very happy how most of the details are handled for them.

Nikhil - no min grade required to interview. We are looking for an entire story versus just focusing on one part of the resume. If someone has a low grade, I'll be looking for examples of why - did they take on a job/leadership role/large scale technical projects while they were in school that pulled them away being able to concentrate on their studies. In the same respect - candidates with perfect grades, I'll be looking for examples of places where they were able to apply their learning. For me personally - I rarely look at high school grades - but I know this is not the same across companies or countries.

    Thanks all!

    Hi Percy -

Silly me - I really should be writing out the full months. Our offsites around the world will be starting this October/November, which is fall here in the US. We will continue our recruiting trips December on, but the first recruiting trips are starting very soon.

    Thanks!

    Hi!

I am an MBA student who will graduate in April 2008 and am really interested in working at Microsoft. Microsoft recruiters will be attending my university's career fair (in Canada), but I noticed that they are looking primarily for individuals with technical backgrounds. I do have an undergrad degree in computer science but I am more interested in the "corporate side of things" for lack of a better phrase. I was wondering if these recruiters would still be open to talking to MBA grads?

    Thanks!!
