How does my new Zune compare to my old iPod?

Jenna My iPod was stolen a couple of weeks ago. Okay, actually all three of my iPods were stolen. Yes, that is right: three. And as I was rushing out to buy a new one, my boss surprised me with a gift of a new Zune. I never would have bought the Zune on my own. I’m a bit prejudiced against the Zune. I believe the iPod is cooler and I’m married to iTunes, so the Zune never really crossed my mind.

Long time readers know I have written about the Zune vs. Pod a few times and have never been shy about my love of Apple. But today I must say, the new Zune is a pretty slick product. The playlist and sharing feature rival any iPod, the radio feature lets me tune into the TV at the gym, and finally I can download audio books for free through the Seattle public library. The wireless synch feature and email aren’t too bad either.

But for a girl like me, the most important thing is the look and "cool factor." And while I will still give Apple props for being the "coolest," the slimmer model and matte black finish of the Zune has enough aesthetic appeal to keep me hooked. But probably the most "uncool" thing of all is that I am hanging out in the new Zune social space, and I have yet to link to any "friends" so to all of you readers, if you have a Zune like me, come join me at my new profile here.

Brilliant piece of propaganda. You keep a very delicate balance between gushing over the Zune and making sure that the reader knows that you are not attacking the iPod (except where you call it old, in the title).

You've had THREE iPods stolen?  It may not be wise to leave them out in plain sight where you work.

Sorry to hear your ipod was stolen, but hey at least now you can enjoy the zune. It  may not be as popular as the ipod, but it is still awesome.

I'm true Apple and won a Zune as a door prize during a party. It is a nice device. However, as any Microsoft product, it's alway easier to duplicate/imitate, then to innovate. I found the radio to be OK, doesn't work well indoors, especially in the gym. Fit and finish were fine, better then the first version (real junk).  The socializing is worthless to us 30 plus crowd. Sound quality was about the same with the iPod having a bit better bass response for the same song. The iPod scroll wheel is the absolute best way to work any MP3 player. Not available with a Zune. No games for the Zune and iTunes is excellent and sooooo easy. Keep your iPod and maybe later a iPod touch. The Zune is fine if you own nothing else.

Compared to the iPod touch you would have bought yourself, you've got quite the relic on your hands.

Maybe you can start to shop in consignment shops, get a nice twenty year old car, and just tell people you're doing the whole retro thing.

Incidently, I lost my Zune 30GB two weeks ago too. I'm considering buying the new Zune 80GB soon. :)

Love my Zune, just wish it was stable.... granted it is Zune30 and not one of the new ones but I have actually returned one because of this behaviour (just stops and turns off for no reason) I refuse to wait that long for them to simply replace my unit again and will deal with it until I can rationalize getting one of the Zune 80s

I was given a Zune when I did my internship at Microsoft. I like it, especially when using it togethr with my xbox and windows media center. However, the only bad thing (and very bad) is that it doesn't support world languages, such as Japanese and Chinese. I have a lot of international songs as well and those names can only appear in the Zune as boxes. I don't actually understand why Microsoft doesn't simply put the font files into it to enable the support; but this is really annoying. So as a result, I keep both of my Zune and my iPod, because I need to use iPod when I want to see the information about the international songs.

With people like you recruiting for Microsoft, I am sure it is going down the drain.
