Cricket brought me back to Microsoft

Samarth Shah - SDE II, Windows Phone Engineering
Srikanth Sundaragopalan - SDE II Online Services Division, Display Ads Dev
Cricket is one of the biggest team sports in the world with a staggering 100 million fans around the globe. Originally from England, the bat and ball game is especially popular in countries with former British influence such as India, Pakistan, Australia, South Africa and Barbados. While cricket remains a lesser-known sport in the United States, the sport is growing here and our country now ranks as one of the top 30 teams in the world. This is due in part to immigration from countries like India – where cricket is the most popular sport among its 1.2+ billion people.
In 1995, Microsoft cricket enthusiasts got together to create the Microsoft Cricket Club (MSCC) which was then instrumental in forming the Northwest Cricket League.
The Microsoft Cricket Club now consists of four teams (blue, red, green and crimson jerseys) and the league has 22 teams across three divisions. MSCC has become not only a successful proving ground for members of the regional team (the Northwest Regional team won the National Championship last year), but a priceless part of many a Microsofties’ workday.
Microspotting sat down with four of our finest batsmen and bowlers to discuss balancing career with cricket at Microsoft.
Did you all grow up playing cricket since you were little kids?
Samarth: Of course. I think it was like that for all of us. When I had free time as a kid we were always playing cricket. I don’t really remember a time before we played cricket. How important was the team in your decision to come to Microsoft?
Srikanth: Obviously, the work was the most important thing, but being able to continue to play competitive cricket was a huge factor. Cricket is still what we live for outside of work and family. And it’s not just any old team here. When there are people, like Samarth, who are going on to play for the US National Team it shows how much you can achieve on this team. Cricket inspires us and the other players inspire us.

Seems like they are all having a ton of fun so far. Wonder what we'll learn next week?!Quick take: E.J. Layne’s intern life
‘Softie in Question: E.J. Layne
Job title: Program Manager Intern – Immersive Office Experience
On summer break from his Master’s degree studies in Computer Science at Georgia Tech, E.J. Layne decided to intern on Microsoft’s Redmond Campus. Far from mastering the photocopier or Starbucks runs, E.J. is trusted with evolving some of Microsoft Office OneNote’s upcoming features and driving new ideas to advance technology.
Beyond his substantial work responsibilities, E.J. also finds time to compete on an Ultimate Frisbee club team and star in Season 3 of My Intern Life (MIL3).
He is one of eight Microsoft interns contributing weekly video snippets for the online mini-series. New episodes will be posted on Microsoft JobsBlog every Wednesday through September. Even if you are just starting to consider interning in the technology industry, MIL3 is not to be missed!
Microspotting caught up with E.J. to hear how he’s settling in as an intern and get behind the scenes of his behind the scene videos.
E.J., was it always a goal to intern at Microsoft?
I guess I always saw Microsoft as a pinnacle in the tech industry, but never really counted on working here. I also looked at Google, but decided that the Program Manager (PM) role at Microsoft was best for me.Why’s that?
At Google, the internship is more of a narrow user experience design role. The PM internship here allows me to design my feature using my computer science background. However, I also have to consider real world user scenarios, competition and development costs in my design. It’s a broader experience and a better fit for me.
